Debswana heeds President call

23 Jun 2014

Debswana is committed to making an impact on the lives of individual Batswana, in addition to contributing to the development of the country.

The company’s managing director, Mr Balisi Bonyongo, said at the handing over of a two-and-half roomed house to Ms Nchidi Daniel of Shashe Mooke recently that Debswana was committed to the Vision 2016 pillar of compassionate, just and caring nation.

One of the company’s values: Show you care, encouraged it to be concerned with the lives of communities. “Our corporate social investment programme is aimed at creating a legacy of prosperity, sustainability and empowerment of local communities in order to improve the livelihoods of Batswana,” he said.

Mr Bonyongo said the Presidential 5Ds should be every Motswana’s responsibility. “Everyone of us should ensure their relatives and neighbours live a dignified life by caring for one another,” he added.

Ms Lebogang Segone, principal social welfare officer, in the Tonota Sub-district, applauded Debswana, saying government alone could not afford to meet people’s needs. She said she appreciated efforts by stakeholders such as Debswana.

The MP for Tonota, Mr Pono Moatlhodi, also said he appreciated Debswana for heeding his plea for building a house for the 89-year-old Ms Daniel. He said the house would instil dignity on Ms Daniel and her orphaned grandchildren and change their lives for the better.

The cost of the house, according to the Chairperson of the Village Development Committee, Mr Anderson Moalosi, is P100 000, which covered furnishing, fencing and electrification. He explained that Debswana handed over the money to the VDC and the committee monitored the construction. ENDS
