The Department of Social and Community Development with the Lobatse Town Council recently hosted sports day for day care centres in the area.

Speaking at the event, chairperson of Extension Gunners, Kitso Dlamini, said the initiative was a way of supporting and encouraging sports activities in the school’s curriculum as well as practical and psychological concepts development.

He said the sports activities helped to promote health and wellness from a tender age. Dlamini also said their mandate was to come up with different alternatives that will help Lobatse diversify its economic status such as transforming into a tourism destination or even a sports hub.

Meanwhile, the acting council principal home economics officer , Kutlo Mophalane, said there were many benefits associated with sports activity day.

She said teachers, day care centres managers, parents and staff were given a platform to interact and share challenges and achievements on a more social and informal setting. She also said the event provides social development and interaction among pre-primary children.

Furthermore, the children were exposed to different challenges as well as encouraging the spirit of competition amongst them said  Mophalane. The main sport activity of the day was athletics and other activities included matching fruits, matching balls, filling the bottle and potato race.

Matching fruits, filling the bottle, potato race and matching balls races challenged the children’s concentration abilities, their level of understanding as well as challenging their ability to follow given instructions.

Out of the nine participating day care centres, St Mary’s day care centre emerged the winners, followed by Bethel B and  Bethel A got position three.

Winners walked away with trophies, certificates of appreciation and medals sponsored by Lobatse town council.

The sports day was celebrated under the theme Sports 2014: Embracing the holistic growth and development of the child. ENDS
