Companies assist BSPCA

About 25 companies in Gaborone put aside their daily business, on June 8, to help raise funds for Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) through golf.
BSPCA is a non-governmental organisation that aims to raise awareness of the abuse to animals in Botswana and is a faced with a serious shortage of funds to run its daily activities.
Speaking in an interview, BSPCA chairperson, Ms Darshini Desilva said this was an annual event that had been running for the past 15 years as one way of raising funds for the organisation that did not have any financial support from government.
Ms Desilva explained that currently, the organisation is negotiating with Gaborone City Council to assist it with financial support. She said BSPCA is housing a capacity of about 100 dogs and 50 cats that need food and medicine on daily basis.
She said they sometimes get some food (left-overs) from hotels; supermarkets band butcheries in order to argument the little food they buy from shops.
However, she explained that the major challenge is the salary of the 13 staff members and medicine for the pets. Apart from the golf day, Ms Desilva explained that they also raise money through membership subscriptions and boardings of dogs.
She further explained that BSPCA also has an outreach programme whereby it teaches people particularly students on how to take care of their pets at home.
It was not immediately known as to how much BSPCA raised on that day as the authorities had not yet counted the donations. Ends
