Sub-council focuses on improving education
05 Jun 2014
An educated nation is important in fast tracking development, says the Molepolole/Letsweletau sub-council chairperson.
Opening the sub-council meeting recently, Mr Jeffrey Sibisibi said they were assessing schools to come up with remedial action plan to improve the quality of education. He said the move was also prompted by the recent developments in the education sector.
Mr Sibisibi said whilst government had appointed task teams in the districts whose mandate was to assess the state of affairs in both primary and secondary schools, the sub-council had taken action to address the situation as well.
He said the previous performance in schools was unsatisfactory hence more needed to be done to see a drastic turn around in performances of the students in the coming years.
The theme of the chairperson’s address was “driving our developments through an educated and an informed nation” which he said was influenced by the mandate of government on the education sector.
He said the government assigned task teams were to look at provision of stationary and text books, office functionality, food availability, functionality of toilets, control of pests in schools, availability of classrooms, condition of buildings and transport availability among others.
Mr Sibisibi said the council had so far sent teams to all 40 schools to collect data on all issues that affected the quality of education. “Immediate, short, medium and long term responses to the challenges have been drawn” said Councilor Sibisibi.
He said some of the issues would be addressed through normal running tenders while others require speeding up procurement and changing the current priorities, noting that some issues would require additional funding.
On procurement of text books and stationary the council chairperson said the sub district had distributed 30% of the books requested by the 40 Primary schools at a cost of more than P2 million.
He however said procurement of text books had been transferred to the Ministry of Education and Skills Development effect April 2014, noting that the handing over from Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was ongoing.
Mr Sibisibi further said the procurement of furniture for both teachers and pupils for all the 40 primary schools has been done.
He said that the sub council continued to assist young athletes in Primary schools with equipment, transport and feeding as a way of promoting sports development in the Sub District.
The chairperson also said procurement of agricultural produce for supplementary feeding for 40 primary schools was done late due to the late rainfall. Ends
