RraBasadika celebrates 100th birthday
03 Jun 2014
Living to be 100 years old is rare. So, it deserves to be celebrated in a special way.
If your grandfather is the man of honour, determine what type of celebration or gifts would be appropriate for him, based on what he would be most comfortable with, and concerning his health and what is feasible.
Whether it’s a big celebration with family flying in from all over the country or a low-key dinner with a few family and friends, emphasise the importance of this milestone and how special your grandfather has been to everyone present.
Ululations and dancing surprised many at Ga-Taukobong ward in Kanye recently when Mr Matlolane 'Tshipo' Mmereki, also known as RraBasadika, turned 100 years old.
The guest of honour was supposed to be former president, Sir Ketumile Masire, who worked closely with him and friends but he did not turn up due to some commitments. Countless numbers of Mmereki’s grandchildren formed choirs and modern dances to entertain the guests.
On behalf of former president, his brother, Mr Basimanyana Masire, told the fully packed homestead that “Tshipo”, as Mr Mmereki is well known, use stay with them at lands, ploughing.
He once worked in South African mines before being a farmer. Mr Masire narrated Mr Mmereki’s life with the Masire family at masimo where they often went on hunting expeditions.
Present at the celebration were the Acting Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Masisi, who represented the Botswana Democratic Party.
He described Mr Mmereki as a dedicated member of the party.
He said Mmereki worked with former president Masire and the late Edison Masisi (the minister’s father), who was the MP for Moshupa, for a long in forging the BDP and recruiting people into it.
Ms Monica Mosie, said on behalf of Mr Mmereki’s grand children that the centenarian brought them up well. She described it as a grace of God that Mr Mmereki lives for 100 years. ENDS
