Botswana set eyes on netball finals

26 May 2014

The Botswana netball team will be chasing a place in the final of the Gaborone 2014 African Youth Games when they clash with Uganda today (May 27) at the BONA courts.

The local girls top the standings with nine points after three victories from four matches and must beat Uganda to strengthen their chances of finishing among the top two.

Teams that finish the round-robin stage in the top two will qualify for the final, while third and fourth place finishers will fight it out for the bronze medal.

Mali are on second place with six points from three matches while Uganda are third with six points after two matches. Kenya are fourth of the six team group with four points.

Botswana have performed impressively so far defeating Zimbabwe 39-38, Swaziland 89-19 and Namibia 57-44. But they will face a strong side in Uganda. The Ugandans won two matches: 53-20 against Zimbabwe and 76-23 against Swaziland.

The local girls must be at their best to prevent a defeat that will be costly in their search for a gold medal. In other matches, Namibia will face Uganda while Kenya meet Swaziland. ENDS
