Former Ragga artist releases album

20 Feb 2013

Having previously worked with My Star producer and founder, Keabetswe ‘Master Dee’ Sesinyi, former ragga dance hall artist, Thabo Nthoka has now released a kwasa kwasa album.

Passionate about music, the 33-year-old Tsetsebjwe born artist, who started his career as a ragga dance hall artist in 1995, goes by the stage name Varisco Davari, which is an Indian name he saw written in a book and decided to use it.

In January 2012, the artist recorded his second solo album named Dumela Batswana and was released in December the same year.

It was recorded at Philpau Studios in Selepa, Francistown, and it has six tracks and features hit tracks like Ke monyale, which talks about a woman he once met and was asking people if he should marry.

Varisco Davari says his lyrics are inspired by things that have happened to him and daily issues that people come across. He says he is the one who programmed his own album as well as arranging the songs in the album.

Furthermore, he says that his music is unique because he avoided featuring already known artists, so that it does not sound the same.

“I did vocals and backing vocals myself, unlike other artists who would ask for people to back them up,” says Varisco Davari.

He released his first ragga album called Summer timer in the late 90’s, which had six tracks and ventured into the kwasa kwasa genre in 2001, when he joined a group called Kups Boasa Stars.

Varisco Davari later decided to form a group called Monate Monate band in the same year and the group split mid 2002 because one of the leading members had died.

He says he ended doing this type of music because he listened to a lot of kwasa kwasa music from the likes of Kofi Olumide and Extra Musica who are artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In addition, he urges people to buy his album because it has a lot of messages to Batswana, especially the song Masika, which talks about how people are dying every day because of HIV/AIDS.

Through the song, he urges people to be aware of this monster and take every advice they are given by the medical personnel. ENDS
