No plans to introduce unemployment scheme
14 Apr 2014
Parliament has been informed that there are no plans to introduce an unemployment benefit scheme in Botswana.
Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu said for a fragile and small economy like Botswana, with extensive social welfare programmes, the sustainability of unemployment benefit scheme would be a challenge.
Therefore, Mr Batshu said government priority was to create jobs and improve the quality of life for citizens through various programmes that were implemented from time to time.
He was responding to a question asked by Lobatse MP, Mr Nehemiah Modubule who had asked the minister to say when the unemployment benefit scheme would be introduced. ENDS
