Gunners shock BDF XI
01 Apr 2014
Extension Gunners, on March 29, pulled an almost impossible feat, beating high riding BDF XI 2-1 in a be Mobile encounter that many considered to be mission impossible for the Peleng giants.
Both teams started the game on a rather low note and Gunners were jolted into action when their keeper, Joseph Gojamang brilliantly saved a penalty from Mokgathi Mokgathi in the opening minutes of the game. The Peleng Boys immediately came back to life and they started showing patches of brilliance.
But Mokgathi later caught the Gunners defence napping and slotted home to give BDF XI a lead. The introduction of Pako Modikwa and Pako 'Pro' Kgosimore after recess gave Gunners the oomph to surge forward in large numbers in search of the equaliser.
Gunners desperately needed a win to offset the 1-0 loss they suffered at the hands of Orapa United the previous weekend. Their prayers were answered in the 14th minute of the second half when Kgosimore headed home after receiving a brilliant cross from midfield maestro Monageng Thaele.
Gunners went ahead in the 19th minute through a Modikwa goal, after a pin point corner kick from Tshepo Molefe was parried back into play by keeper Takudzwa Ndoro.
Gunners assistant coach, Thabo 'Mahala' Motang said he was not worried about the threat of relegation. The win over BDF XI placed Gunners on a collision course with other be Mobile title contenders such as Gaborone United, Township Rollers, and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.
But Motang said he was not bothered because with each team that came along, he would enjoy the support of the other three. He added that the win had not only edged them a step or two out of harm’s way but also sharpened their courage to take any team that would come along.
For her part, BDF XI marketing and communications manager Peo Keatlholetswe commended Gunners for matching her team pound for pound.“It was never going to be easy to beat Gunners in their own backyard especially because they will do anything to avoid relegation. But we are BDF XI. We will keep on fighting,” she said. Ends
