Botswana has to provide a platform for both men and women to progress in order for women to be involved in decision making as their male counterparts.
This was said by a University of Botswana media studies lecturer, Dr Letshwiti Tutwane when addressing primary and secondary schools pupils who were celebrating Radio day at Notwane Primary School on Saturday, March 1.
Dr Tutwane said it was a cause for concern in Botswana to find that women were still holding lower positions in the media, which he said was a worrisome scenario since women and men had the same capabilities.
Students from six primary and secondary schools celebrated the World Radio Day with various activities such as debate and quizzes based on the theme: Gender Equality and Women Empowerment in Radio.’
In her remarks, Notwane Primary School headteacher, Ms Kamogelo Samo said the radio competition served as a learning platform for students and therefore encouraged teachers to utilise radio lessons to supplement teaching.
Participating primary schools included Masa, Tsogang and Notwane primary schools while the junior secondary schools were Maoka, Tlokweng and Bonnington.
The actual World Radio Day was celebrated on February 13, and is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio. ENDS
