In July, Tuelo Matlou launched Loetse, a new hair oil that is more than just a product, it is a celebration of natural hair.

With its name translating to ‘fluffy,’ Loetse is quickly making a name for itself by delivering on its promise of soft, manageable hair and selling out in a matter of weeks.

This is the story of a five-year journey born out of a mother’s love and a commitment to nurturing natural beauty.

In an interview, Matlou said the oil was formulated with a blend of locally sourced ingredients, including rosemary, lavender, fenugreek, cloves, moringa and neem, with olive oil as the carrier.

She however noted that sourcing such ingredients had been a challenge she was determined to overcome.

According to Matlou, the combination of ingredients was designed to stimulate hair growth, reduce breakage, improve scalp health and leave the hair shiny and soft.

The product is packaged in UV-protective glass to prevent oxidation and preserve the herbs’ nutrients.

Matlou’s journey began during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

“I started experimenting with ingredients and making my own products when COVID hit,” she said.

As a wife and mother of three, she said her initial inspiration came from caring for her young daughter’s hair. “I had to rely on myself to wash and style her hair, not the salon. That’s how my journey began.”

For Matlou, such a venture was also deeply personal. Growing up, she was told that natural hair was difficult to maintain and looked ‘untidy.’

However, after her daughter was born, she was determined to embrace and care for her natural hair. The struggle to find an ideal product for both her own and her daughter’s hair motivated her to create her own.

Olefile Rathapo, one of Matlou’s first clients, shared how the oil helped with his thinning hair and beard.
