Minister explains bogosi structure
04 Feb 2013
The structure of bogosi in Kgalagadi, North East, Chobe and Ghantsi Districts is different from other districts in Botswana.
Local Government and Rural Development assistant minister, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso told Ntlo ya Dikgosi that such was in accordance with sections 77:1(a) and 78(2) of the Constitution.
She explained that according to these provisions, members from such areas were selected from their own number to Ntlo ya Dikgosi by persons for performing functions of the Kgosi within each of the areas.
She argued that there was no anomaly in such an arrangement because it was provided for in the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the republic.
"In this regard, I do not deem it necessary to make any correction as this would not violate the Constitution." Ms Tshireletso was responding to a question asked by Kgalagadi South Region Kgosi Toto II to explain why Bogosi structure in Kgalagadi, North East, Chobe and Ghanzi Districts was different from other districts in Botswana and if the minister did not deem it necessary to correct the anomaly.
