03 Dec 2013

Botswana Police Service director of traffic, Senior Superintendent Katlholo Mosimanegape has appealed to the public to display positive attitudes on the roads during the festive season and beyond

Speaking during the launch of 16 Days of Activism on Crime and Road Safety in Maun recently, he said law enforcement officers were conducting patrols in different hot spots to deal with those on the wrong side of the law.

He said they would patrol the village’s streets until end of December to curb criminal activities and ensure reduction of accidents and crime in Ngamiland District.

Mr Mosimanegape said safety began with an individual and encouraged them to join hands and ensure crime and road accidents were prevented in the country.

He said police had realised that two months before end of the year, incidents of crime and road accidents were on the increase hence the introduction of 60 Days of Activism to encourage behaviour change among the communities.

Senior Superintendent Mosimanegape said the 60 Days of Activism on Crime and Road Safety aimed at reducing lawlessness. He said that roving patrols would be in place to ensure that the festive season was the safest and most memorable.

Senior Superintendent Mosimanegape was concerned about the rate of crime and road fatalities in the country while calling on closer collaboration between government, non-government agencies, the media and other sectors of civic society in promoting road safety

He appealed to the business community to save their money in banks and also urged parents to look after their children and ensure they were left in safe places. For his part the deputy divisional commander in the Northern region, Superintendent Chajane Baleseng said there was a lot of cash flow in Maun due to tourism activities and entertainment thus attracting petty thieves.

Superintendent Baleseng said frequent crimes in Maun included rape, murder, drug use, house breaking and road accidents, noting that most road accidents happen in the village due to careless driving.

He appreciated efforts made by the police clusters and called on other stakeholders to play their role in combating crime in the district. Ends
