Corruption battle for all - Lesang
01 Dec 2013
The fight against corruption needs to be tackled from all facets so as to realise successful investments and employment, says Lobatse Town Council (LTC) mayor, Ms Caroline Lesang.
Addressing LTC full council meeting, Ms Lesang said Batswana had an important stake in the fight against corruption and if illuminated, the result would be accelerated economic growth and prosperity in the township.
“Out of this personal commitment, we will gain more since the resources geared towards development will realize their positive worth,” she said.
The mayor said the water situation had not yet improved as the country was yet to receive required rainfall to recharge the dams adding that dam levels were dangerously low due to consistently high temperatures resulting in high evaporation rates. What exarcebated the situation, she said, was illegal watering of livestock, gardens, car washes and construction activities.
To address this issue, she said, Water Utilities Corporation was selling non-potable water to be used in construction, car washes, gardens and other non-portable uses while at the same time monitoring water restriction measures in the district.
On a different note, Cllr Lesang noted the while analysis indicated that male youth were increasingly showing more interest than other groups in utilizing the Lobatse public library text for purposes of assignments, there was a challenge in that reliable supply of water is causing reduction in numbers accessing the library since the toilets are not accessible.
Cllr Lesang noted that according to the 2011 Population and Housing Census, the Lobatse Constituency has a total voting population of over 18 000 but just over 5 300 registered. She urged the community to make use of the coming supplementary registration to register in large numbers adding that that failure to register would disenfranchise majority of the populace.
“As a result of low registration, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued communication to the effect that supplementary registration will be conducted from February 21st to March 2nd 2014,” she said.
Mayor Lesang noted that this might be the last supplementary registration exercise as such she advised all to take this opportunity that led to electing the legislator of their choice. Ends
