As part of Teachers' Day, teachers in Gaborone recently donated P40 100 to a young man who suffers from a kidney disease.
The donation was part of the teachers’ contribution to the Vision 2016 pillar of building a compassionate, just and caring nation. The teachers donated to Mr Koko, a 26-year-old University of Botswana student whose studies were affected ever since he was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2009.
Teachers had been involved in various community projects such as building houses for destitute people. When narrating the background of the project, Maoka Junior Secondary School head, Ms Tselane Temeki said teachers in Gaborone region had known about Mr Koko’s situation since 2012.
“We decided to assist him during preparations for teachers’ day. We regard Mr Koko as a leader of tomorrow and we felt we should assist him because this country cannot lose future leaders,” she said.
In his remarks, acting director-south east region at the department of secondary education, Mr Benson Rauwe said the donation was an important gesture that showcased Batswana’s spirit of 'botho'.
“Through this donation, you are proving the notion that Batswana are a loving and peaceful nation. Your willingness to donate money to meet Koko’s medical expense is indicative of the teaching profession’s commitment and compassion to its citizens. Your gesture is greatly appreciated,” he said.
