Intellectually disabled to attend training in Chobe
24 Nov 2013
Seventy-two learners from 18 primary schools across Botswana have been selected for a month-long block training hosted by Kasane Educational Centre.
Block training is a transition programme for learners with intellectual disabilities who have outgrown primary school. This marked the third leg of the block training since 2011 where 59 learners graduated.
The objectives of training, according to the regional director of education in Chobe, Mr Sonny Mooketsi, are to facilitate the transition of learners from primary schools, to identify and refine skills acquired by learners during their stay in primary school and to empower young people with disabilities with entrepreneurship skills for self-employment.
The chairperson of the Chobe District Council, Mr Mwanota Kachana, explained that citizens had the responsibility to take care of disabled children.
“Those who are wealthy, let the nation benefit from your wealth, those who claim to be educated let the nation benefit from your education,” he challenged. Some of the programmes for training include hospitality, bakery, flower arrangement, basketry, horticulture and pottery.
The intellectually disabled students, who are in Kasane for the block training, come from Serowe, Kachikau, Manyana and Mmadinare. The training started on November 18 and will end on December 13. ENDS
