Chobe starts countdown to 2016
20 Nov 2013
The national flag was hoisted in Chobe District on November 19 to mark the count down to 2016 as the country will be celebrating 50 years of independence as well as create awareness and excitement towards the milestone.
Speaking at the ceremony, the district commissioner (DC), Dr Temba Mmusi said about nine more flags would be hoisted in the rest of the Chobe villages. Dr Mmusi explained that Botswana did not work in isolation as Vision 2016 was aligned to the international Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
He noted that through Botswana’s 2016 vision and various government initiatives, the MDGs could also be realised. “We are striving to achieve MDGs of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger through the poverty eradication initiative,” he said.
He advised people to always remember the symbolism of the flag each time they look at it. The flag was hoisted 100 metres above the ground on a transmitter tower owned by the Department of Broadcasting Services. ENDS
