BTCL houses the needy

18 Nov 2013

The Vice President, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe on Monday (November 18) received a P400 000 donation from the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTCL). The money is to be used in construction of houses in the Mmadinare constituency.

Dr Kedikilwe, who is also Mmadinare MP, appreciated the gesture and BTCL’s robust corporate social responsibility programme. He also commended the company for carefully choosing the areas that needed assistance more.

Dr Kedikilwe said construction of the houses in the selected villages would not only uplift the living standards of the recipients but would also improve their villages’ environment and aesthetics.

When presenting the cheque, BTC's chief executive officer, Mr Paul Taylor said his company supported forums that promoted economic growth and attracted investment to the country.

Mr Taylor said BTCL also participated in activities that promoted and encouraged the use of information communication technology in line with government Maitlamo policy. He said his company prided itself in being responsive to the needs of the communities in which it operated.

"We hope our gesture will contribute towards reducing the number of Batswana without housing by 2016”, he said. Shelter, he said, was a basic human right and therefore encouraged all to play a role towards this noble cause.

Mr Taylor said BTCL identified beneficiaries from Kgagodi, Diloro, Mogapi and Tamasane villages where they intended to build a single house per village.

He explained that bthe houses would comprise two bedrooms, toilet, kitchen and a bathroom at a cost of P100 00 per unit. The project will be undertaken in partnership with the Palapye Administrative Authority, which will supervise and undertake all aspects of project management. ENDS
