Japanese donates minibus to scouts association

17 Nov 2013

The government of Japan, through its embassy in Botswana, has donated a minibus to the Botswana Scouts Association (BSA).

When handing over the minibus to the association on Saturday, November 16, Ambassador Hiroyasu Kobayashi said the donation was in response to the BSA patron Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama's outcry of the association’s difficulty of securing transport.

Mr Kobayashi indicated that in addition to being used for youth activities conducted by the BSA, the minibus would also be utilised as transportation for vulnerable children in the Kweneng area.

He stated that the number of orphans and vulnerable children unfortunately constitutes 10 per cent of the youth population in Botswana. The association’s commitment, he said is evident as they have been providing schooling support, including the transportation of orphans in the Kweneng area for the past five years.

He said therefore the minibus would ensure the safe transportation of those children. “The youth including orphans and vulnerable children are the most valuable resources for the brighter future of the country and naturally, securing the wellbeing for them should be a priority for the whole society,” he noted.

The ambassador also applauded government’s numerous schemes and policies meant for uplifting the youth. “Together with the strong commitment from the members of the civil society and the continued support from the government of Botswana, I believe that Japan’s positive assistance can reach out to the promising youth and bring them to newer heights.”

He further praised the scouts movement for their hard work and strong commitment He said their dedication towards the betterment of the civil society had been extended in various dimensions.

He said he wished that the youth will fully utilise and benefit from the opportunities and support given to them so that they will become the great leaders in the near future. In his remarks, President Khama expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for the support they give to Botswana and stated that he remains hopeful that the donated mini bus will play a positive role in assisting in the lives of many.
