Initiative encourages social responsibility

17 Nov 2013

Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust resonates well with the country’s national vision 2016, The Vice President, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe has said.

Officiating at the fundraising gala dinner hosted by the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee local trust task force, Dr Kedikilwe said the initiative encouraged Batswana to contribute to causes of common good.

He said, as part of the global family, looking beyond borders by way of contributing to deserving initiatives such as the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust was a self-sacrificing gesture.

He appreciated all those who contributed towards the fundraising dinner saying theirs was a reflection of social responsibility and commitment to contributing towards a noble cause through selfless determination.

Despite the economic down turn that affected small and big businesses, Dr Kedikilwe commended the overwhelming response towards the trust by the private sector and individuals.

He said through the funds raised from the gala dinner, some human souls would taste humanness, the taste of being and the taste of a dignified self.  “This is the enriching voyage of our lives,” he said.

For his part, the chairman of the trust, Mr Patrick Balopi, thanked all the task force members for their endurance, selfless spirit and determination, to voluntarily serve in the local task force.

He said most importantly, the local task force saw their nomination to serve on the committee as a call and service to the nation which was driven by the desire to serve humanity.

The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust was established at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Australia in 2011 and was formally launched in February 2012.

The trust was established to celebrate the Queen’s illustrious 60 years contribution as Head of Commonwealth and a life of public service. The trust, which is headed by the former British Prime Minister John Major, seeks to afford the needy citizens across the Commonwealth and beyond the opportunity to create a lasting tribute to the Queen.
