GU register second win

27 Oct 2013

Gaborone United halted their poor form in the be Mobile Premier League with a  2-0 win over Uniao Flamingo Santos on Friday evening (October 25).

Ronald Chikomo and defender Gobonyeone Selefa sealed victory for the Reds with two first half goals at Molepolole Sports Complex.   It was the second win of the season for GU after seven matches. The three points lifted the Gaborone giants into ninth place with 10 points, up from position 13 and eased pressure on head coach David Bright.

GU peppered the Santos goalmouth with attack after attack and dully took the lead in the seventh minute when the lively Chikomo converted a through ball past goalkeeper Kgosietsile Senjoba.

Senjoba’s involvement in the match against his former team lasted only 13 minute before injury forced him off, and another veteran former GU goalkeeper Boitumelo Kediseng replaced him. With the ever impressive Tebogo Sosome forming a solid combination with Jackie Mothatego in midfield, GU were in firm control as Santos posed minimal trouble to goalkeeper Noah Maposa in the first half.

Chikomo could have doubled the lead midway through the first half, but found the side-netting after connecting with a precise cross from Tebogo Sembowa. Edwin Olerile, who played as a left winger and had a field day tormenting the Santos defence, watched in frustration as his long range shot bounced off the upright with Kediseng well beaten.

Chikomo reacted quickly to head home the rebound but the goal was controversially ruled offside. GU finally made their supremacy count when Selefa doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime by finishing off a free-kick taken by Olerile.

Maposa finally offered his services when he punched away a dangerous free-kick from Kabo Molokwane in the second half, but GU had more chances to widen the winning margin which they spurned as usual. Santos were suffering their sixth defeat in nine matches and have now plunged into position 13, one place above the relegation zone.

In other matches Extension Gunners’ slipped into deeper troubles after they went down 2-0 to the resurgent Tafic. The Matjiminyenga boys were registering their second win in a row as they continue to recover under new coach Darlington Dodo.
