Kgalagadi South Brigade staff and students recently showed compassion to elderly residents of Maubelo by donating a garden to them.

Speaking during the official handover of the garden in Maubelo, Kgalagadi South Brigade principal, Mr Dick Mweshi, said the donation was done in order to drive the Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation.

“We have to be compassionate to those members of the community who are not able-bodied enough to fend for themselves. As active members of the society, we have to care and provide for them,” he said. He further said that the donation would help to regenerate in the beneficiaries some sense of hope in life.

“Donating to the elderly members of the community gives them a feeling that they are loved, cherished and valued and this makes them feel needed and important,” the principal said.

Furthermore, Mr Mweshi said that they had realised that elders needed supplementary feeding to keep them fit in their old age, hence the donation of a garden. He said the beneficiaries would be responsible for taking care of the garden, sale of the produce and using the proceeds to sustain their lives as well as use excess produce for consumption.

For his part, Maubelo’s Kgosi Simon Lorekang expressed gratitude at the gesture, expressing satisfaction at finding young people who care about the welfare of the elderly. He encouraged the staff and students of Kgalagadi South Brigade to continue their good deeds and to continue supporting the less privileged such as the senior citizens.

Maubelo Village Development Committee chairperson, Mrs Minah Lituwani, commended the donors for their kindness and efforts in helping the government eradicate abject poverty and improve the livelihoods of the poor members of the community. She also encouraged them to extend their helping hand to other less privileged people in other villages. Mrs Lituwani advised Maubelo youth to emulate the good deeds of the staff and students of the brigade. ENDS
