WUC advocates conservation

14 Aug 2013

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) continues to advocate for conservation of water because dam levels in the greater Gaborone and the entire southern part of the country remain critically low.

WUC North public relations officer, Ms Lorato Phuthe said in an interview that the Gaborone Dam that has a carrying capacity of 141 million cubic metres currently sits at 20.69 per cent.

“This amount can only last up to nine months, without inflow to the greater Gaborone,” she said.

Ms Phuthe said the greater Gaborone currently relied on water supply from Letsibogo Dam through the North-South Carrier pipe and the Molatedi Dam from South Africa, which has also reduced its supply by half because the dam level was now below 26 per cent.

Thus, she urged the public to adhere to water restrictions to manage the use of the resource, which includes use of potable water for gardens, parks, agricultural purposes and construction purposes except with a written permission from WUC where the use of non-potable water has been proven to be detrimental to the quality of work.

She said the corporation continued to engage in activities aimed at intensifying public education on water usage, such as the ‘Botswana o a Kgala’ campaign that aims to involve all water users in conserving water. ENDS
