Kang internal roads project on track
24 May 2018
Botconsult Engineers and Planners resident engineer, Mr Kealeboga Sekgwama says measureable progress has been realised in the construction of the 22km Kang internal roads.
Giving a progress report on the project at a technical meeting in Kang recently, Mr Sekgwama said the P217 million project, undertaken under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), stood at 43 per cent.
He said the project was progressing as planned, and that it was actually two weeks ahead of schedule.
Mr Sekgwama noted that the project commenced in July 2017, and that it was scheduled to be completed in June 2019 as per the agreement between Kgalagadi District Council and Lobkom Investments.
He said the contractor has made progress on the road works and relocation of water lines, and that the engineer’s site office has been completed and occupied.
For his part, Lobkom Investments contracts manager, Mr Mpusang Kganane said they were striving to complete the project ahead of time.
He said the progress of the road was promising and that they had already accomplished the biggest part of the job, which included structural, base layer and road excavation works.
He further noted that a borrow pit mining permit was approved last year and that stockpiling and sampling of gravel material was ongoing.
He said road surfacing aggregates and concrete stones were being sourced from Bela Bela quarry. “I am pleased to let you know that prime and bitumen arrived on site early this year,” he said.
Site agent, Mr Olefile Segwabe said despite that the project was going as planned, they still had a drawback as one plot owner was still waiting for compensation for relocation.
In addition, he said other causes of delay included some plot owners who had been relocated and compensated, but had not removed their water metre boxes on the road.
Responding, Kgalagadi District Council chief civil and mechanical engineering officer, Mr Gabriel Mpofu advised the contractor to report the plot owners to Water Utilities Corporation to disconnect the metre boxes.
He also noted that the project had created 78 jobs for locals.
Meanwhile, technical services deputy director, Mr Regie Gobotsamang from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development commended the contractor and the consultant for progressing beyond the programme despite issues of cash flow. Ends
