Ministry introduces measures to address indiscipline

06 Dec 2017

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Moiseraela Goya has expressed worry about indiscipline in schools, saying the behaviour of a small minority could disrupt education.

Mr Goya told Parliament on Tuesday that the ministry has introduced a wide variety of measures to address indiscipline in schools and sensitise learners on the dangers of substance abuse.

He said the measures include strengthening of the pastoral policy which advocates and involves students in some of the decision making and running of the school, counselling at school level and at regional office, and anti-substance abuse fairs for students, and the formation of regional anti-drug abuse clubs to empower peers.

“The involvement of the community in school is also very important through Parent Teacher Associations, kgotla meetings and open days,” Mr Goya added.

He further said the ministry worked with non-governmental organisations to help address students on issues of substance abuse. He said such NGOs include Young African Leadership Initiative, Botswana Student Network, Stepping Stones, Hope World Wide Botswana, Youth Alliance for Leadership & Development in Africa, Captive EYE, BOSASNET and others.

Francistown East MP, Mr Buti Billy had asked the minister to state strategies in place to address the problem of alcohol and drug abuse which has led to indiscipline among students. ENDS
