Water situation in Kgatleng worrisome

25 Jun 2013

Water situation in Kgatleng district is worrisome, despite Water Utilities Corporation (WUC)'s effort to meet demand for the 23 villages in the district.

Council chairperson, Mr Tona Mooketsi told a full council meeting on June 29 that some parts of Bokaa village are experiencing low pressure due to the usage of old equipment that needs replacement.

Mr Mooketsi said WUC would continue to bowse water to the area while working on nterventions to resolve the problem.

He said current low levels of dams may lead to water shortage in the greater Gaborone area if saving measures are not adhered to.

Mr Mooketsi said the corporation embarked on water rationing and restriction on May 26 as well as distributed schedules to the public.

He said the situation is compounded by the maintenance work that is carried out on the North South Carrier scheme pipeline (NSC1).

In an effort to improve security, Mr Mooketsi said projects such as the design review of Oodi, Matebeleng and Modipane water supply scheme upgrade would be carried out in Kgatleng district during the 2013/14 financial year, he said.

He said Ramotlabaki reverse Osmosis plant would be refurbished together with the installation of diesel standby generator at Mochudi revenue office, Mochudi water booster station, waste water pump station No. 3 and Malotwana and Artesia boreholes which would be used during power interruptions.

The council chairperson expressed worry over a high number of unserviced plots saying the problem is aggravated by the pace at which land board allocates plots which exceeds the pace at which services are provided.

“While awaiting hi-level sourcing of funds to enable the serving of the plots, a total of eighty nine pre-paid water standpipes have been installed in all the villages in order to replace conservative standpipes and also supply water to unserviced land”, he said.

Mr Mooketsi said the beneficiaries would soon be allocated water tokens that would enable them to access water. Ends
