Mahalapye youth educates through theatre

28 Mar 2017

Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘you must be the change you wish to see in the world’ and these words resonate well with one Mahalapye born Peter William who makes change with something that is close to his heart.
William, founder of Legae La Mega theatre group uses theatre plays to educate and entertain his audience.
In an interview with BOPA, 33 year old William said he has been involved in theatre, traditional song and dance since the age of 10, something which he  benefited from and gained vast knowledge on performing arts.
‘‘I then developed more interest and love for drama, that is when I decided to use my acting and directing skills to change lives”, he said.
“In 2005 my passion of establishing my own drama grew and this was not a hard task to accomplish as some people were already interested in joining my group” he said.
He said that his drama group was then established and Legae La Mega drama group exists to showcase talent through acting and to send a positive message to the public through plays that depict issues surrounding them and to keep its members away from crime.
He noted that his group once volunteered to raise awareness on PMTCT, adding that they first entered competitions in order to partake in the campaign but they ended up volunteering.
Apart from edutainment, William said in 2008 Legae La Mega group did a community service project where they built a toilet for a less fortunate individual and also facilitated a litter picking campaign themed ‘bophepa ke kgwetlho’, both in Makwate village.
Further, he said in a period of 15 years he has directed plays of several schools and these schools have always scooped either position one or two in drama competitions.
He said he has worked with Kgalemang junior in Serowe, Mahalapye secondary, Pekenene secondary and  Maikano Secondary School drama groups to name a few.
William also prides himself that in 2015 he directed the Mahalapye Primary School drama group when they entered the Association of Botswana School of Performing Arts (Abospa) competitions and his play scooped position one in 2015 and 2016.
He said drama keeps him busy and it keeps him from engaging in bad activities that affect the youth such as alcohol and drug abuse and stealing.
“We are currently working with Motor Vehicle Accident Fund where we teach children of Mahalapye East and west about pedestrian road accidents and how to prevent them”, he said.
However, he concluded by asking for sponsorships saying Legae La Mega is working on a project that will benefit the nation. ENDS
