A motivational speaker, Tumo Kenosi in collaboration with some local artists will embark on a project aimed at enhancing effective learning and promoting a culture of reading amongst schools in the Ngamiland region.
The project dubbed ‘No to alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and criminal activities’ is targeting junior and secondary school students and the main objective is to sensitise them about the consequences of indulging in social ills while studying.
In an interview, the Kenosi who is also an author said the project was more like a talk show and a theatre as local artists such as poets would spread message while on the other hand they would pick some characters from schools to perform.
He said they focused on junior and secondary school students because they were faced with many challenges and believed that the project would assist them to make well informed decisions about their future..
He also pointed out that at times parents blamed teachers for poor results while on the other hand they had neglected their responsibilities in the upbringing of their children and their studies.
The vocal artist and motivational speaker said some parents had failed their children as parental guidance is lacking hence students had resorted to engage in some activities which destroyed their lives.
“I am optimistic that the project would be beneficial to students as it would promote a culture of reading . Although it takes time to adapt to change , I am hopeful that some would understand that indeed social ills are distraction to education,” he added.
Kenosi said there would be a special session where parents would be taken on board to appreciate the project and given feedback from the students’ perspective. He explained that at the end they wanted parents to create a friendly environment where their children could communicate with them freely on any issues affecting them.
However, Kenosi also revealed that preparations for the project were at an advanced stage adding that he had written to the education minitry for authorisation and once permission was granted they would kick start.
He managed to acquire a PA system thanks to the North District Council chairperson, Reaboka Mbulawa as he bought it for him to support his good work.
He said they intended to start in the region before they could roll out to other parts of the country. Meanwhile, Kenosi said during the talk show, he would have an opportunity to share with students his two books, Steps of Life and Monate ga o Fele.
The two are educative and informative as they carry a strong message which educates young people on how to live dignified lives. BOPA
