Kuru festival organising committee releases report

26 Jan 2016

The 2015 Kuru Dance festival has released a narrative report while waiting for the audited report.

In his presentation to the community of D’Kar recently, Kuru Dance festival administrator,  Xukuri Xukuri said compared to previous festivals the 2015 festival made profits.

According to Xukuri, the 2015 Kuru Festival made P30 200 in gate takings which he said was a 13 per cent increase compared to past festivals. He said the revenue was deposited into the trust’s bank account.

He said with sponsors such as Barclays Bank which injected P369 000, the committee was able to carry advertisements as well as marketing.

Kuru festival was not only assisted by Barclays Bank, but the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture also injected P199 000 and also gave technical support.

Xukuri explained to the community that the ministry assisted in food catering and with payment of groups that were participating. There were 22 groups in total; with 15 San groups, six non San and one international group of San origin from Namibia.

The committee, Xukuri said, also set up stalls that assisted in revenue increase for the organisation. He said they also had volunteers from the D’Kar community whom they paid.

Despite the success of last year’s festival, Xukuri noted that they met challenges when preparing for the event.

He said delay in advertising the event was one of the obstacles, saying that was as a result of the main sponsors who are based in Gaborone.

He also explained that they had budget constraints which limited them to less groups than they had wished for. “We could not accommodate all groups who were willing to partake in the festival,” stated Xukuri.

Nonetheless, Xukuri said the committee has started preparations for the 2016 Kuru festival. Xukuri said they are carrying fundraising internally as a way to increase their revenue. Ends
