Study camp initiative to improve results
22 Sep 2015
A study camp for Mogonye Primary School pupils has been established to improve performance in primary school leaving examinations. The schools head teacher, Ms Violet Majakoba said she introduced the initiative after arriving at the school early this year.
She said both parents and teachers welcomed the initiative. She added that they went for a benchmarking exercise at Dipotsana Primary School in order to learn from the school as it had already introduced the initiative, and was beneficial to them.
She said through the initiative, Standard Seven pupils would be staying in the school during vacations so that they could study and revise with the help of teachers.
“I realised that a lot of pupils were failing because they were walking long distances to and from their homes which gave them limited time to read, relax and do school work,” she said.
She said if they were in school under the care and supervision of teachers and volunteered parents, they would have enough time to study. She said they started the initiative during the second term, but that it did not produce expected results as a lot of teachers were attending sports trips, while others were compiling reports.
She said last term pupils were studying in the afternoon, but that this term they would be studying from 6pm to 8pm since electricity was now available in the school. The camp will be from the 5th to the 13th October.
Ms Majakoba noted that Standard Seven parents have agreed to contribute P100 per child while other parents will contribute P20 in order to buy food for pupils during their camp.
She said other parents have volunteered to buy grocery, adding that one parent has already bought rice while others will buy vegetables. She added that even teachers have volunteered to toiletry. Ms Majakoba said parents have also volunteered to cook for the pupils. Ends
