Education on land usage vital

28 Jan 2015

Kgosi Oleteletswe Mosweu of Dukwi has requested government to intensify public education on land usage.

He told a kgotla meeting addressed by Member of Parliament for Nata/Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga on January 26 that the majority of allocated land was not being used for the intended purpose.

Some of the allocated land had not been utilised hence the need to educate Batswana about the importance of land, adding that some Batswana pride themselves with having huge chunks of land which was not being utilised.

He said the area was blessed with sites and enormous underground water.  He however called on the ministry responsible to assist them in preserving such natural treasures.  Kgosi Mosweu said the sites could be turned into a tourism destination to benefit the community.

The Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Boynyana Lesole raised a concern about the primary and junior secondary schools students who abscond from school only to engage in social ills.

Mr Lesole also blamed parents for failing to discipline their children, adding that most have left their children alone and were staying at cattle posts.  He highlighted that in recent years, the school results had dropped drastically. He however appealed to all stakeholders to come together to address the situation.

In addition, he complained about poor service delivery by police officers in the area, explaining that police had cited lack of transport as a stumbling block.  This, he said, had resulted in people losing hope in reporting cases to the police.

In response, Mr Majaga said he and the area councilors came up with a roadmap that would help them deliver and serve the people efficiently.  He noted that during his absence some issues would be addressed by councillors to ensure continuity and progress.  About the schools’ performance, he said there was need for the leadership, parents and teachers to work together.

Mr Majaga also promised to arrange meetings with respective ministries to come and address issues of concern faced by the constituents. ENDS
