06 Oct 2014

The Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa mines (OLDM) have adopted Letlhakane Senior Secondary School and have invested P200 000 for the purchasing of information communication technology equipment.

Corporate affairs manager of OLDM, Ms Shungu Malikongwa said they adopted the school for the next three years in which they would provide financial and material support to enhance instruction in classrooms, facilitate a conducive environment to learning in areas such as ICT resources, school library and sporting resources for the school.

Already, Debswana had adopted Mokoboxane primary school. As Debswana, Ms Malikongwa said they were proud to have heeded the call to partner with government as the private sector.

She highlighted that Debswana marked 45 years of existence in 2014 and had turned the hopes and dreams of many people into reality through their corporate citizen programme.

She said OLDM mines were passionate about the communities which they operate within and they also believe in stakeholder engagement through pulling together with the Boteti community and ensuring that they only not build trust, but also they show that they care about the lives of people.

Mr Pius Molapisi, acting school head of Letlhakane senior secondary school said the school has a total enrolment of 1 668 students, which translate into 42 streams, thus 21 classes of form 4s and 21 classes of form 5s.

He also said one of the major challenges to the school is truancy amongst some learners, shortage of classrooms and teenage pregnancy. Mr Molapisi also expressed gratitude for the adoption of the school.

He said that the partnership between LSS and OLDM mines would go a long way in improving the academic performance of the school. Ends
