16 Dec 2025
The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, says government would commit during to a comprehensive overhaul of education physical infrastructure, transforming it into modern, safe, optimally fit-for-purpose, and sustainable teaching and learning environment during NDP 12.The minister was responding to a question in Parliament from Lentsweletau MP, Mr Tshenolo Bogatsu, who had asked if the minister would consider upgrading the school’s classroom capacity to cater for the ever-increasing student population, provide a timeframe for the work, and increase staff accommodation in line with the school’s capacity. This strategy she said, aimed to improve access, equity, inclusivity, quality, and efficiency in teaching and learning, aligning with the provision of 21st Century skills. She said that Kopong Junior Secondary School was operating significantly beyond its intended capacity and requires substantial upgrades. Ms Kgafela-Mokoka acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating that Kopong Junior Secondary School was initially designed for nine streams but was currently running at 18 streams, which necessitated the construction of additional classrooms to accommodate existing students and future growth trends. For Kopong and other schools, expansion projects would address all the MP’s concerns, including the construction of additional staff houses, the upgrading of toilet facilities, and the modernisation of the administration block, hostels, and all academic facilities.
