Centre To Accelerate Data-Driven Economy
25 Nov 2025
The Ministry of Communication and Innovation has launched the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), a Tier III certified facility that positions Botswana at the forefront of regional digital infrastructure development.
Moreover, the facility will accelerate the nation’s ambitions for a modern and data-driven economy.
Speaking at the launch in Gaborone yesterday, Minister for State President Mr. Moeti Mohwasa said the centre stood as ‘a symbol of national pride and a mark of our progress’ reinforcing government’s commitment to socio-economic advancement through world-class digital systems.
Mr Mohwasa said the facility reflected years of investment in secure, scalable, and resilient ICT infrastructure, further describing it as ‘a significant milestone toward the realisation of our digital transformation strategy as a government and as a country’.
ICT infrastructure, Mr Mohwasa emphasised that it was a key enabler of connectivity and a driver of inclusive development.
In addition to the digital transformation strategy, he said the centre supported the recently launched Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, designed to unlock new engines of growth, create jobs, enhance Botswana’s regional competitiveness, and promote sustainable development.
He said the advancement in the national ICT landscape was vital, positioning the new data centre as a strategic asset in Botswana’s economic modernisation.
He confirmed that on October 23, the Digital Delta Data Centre attained Tier III certification for a constructed facility from the Uptime Institute.
He said the award confirmed that the facility met global standards for concurrently maintainable infrastructure, ensuring that planned maintenance can be carried out without interrupting power or cooling to server rooms.
“The centre is designed and built to meet world standards and will significantly improve the government’s service delivery,” he said, adding that it also allowed Botswana to fully leverage its extensive fiber network, completing a national digital ecosystem that is expected to enhance connectivity across the entire country.
Mr Mohwasa said Botswana’s strategic location enabled it to serve as a regional gateway, adding that government was committed to leveraging the advantage.
“As global and African demand for data centers grows, the Digital Delta Data Centre is poised to serve a regional population of approximately 350 million people,” he said.
He emphasised that Botswana had long been recognised for good governance and socio-economic stability, adding that the facility reinforced the nation’s leadership role.
He said several regional governments had already visited to learn from Botswana’s experience in building national data centres, an indication of the country’s growing influence in regional ICT development.
He pointed out that a crucial component of government’s digital agenda was safeguarding national data sovereignty.
He referred to the Data Protection Act of 2024, effective since January 2025, as a key framework ensuring that data generated within Botswana was governed securely and responsibly.
He therefore urged both public and private sector stakeholders to ensure that the new data centre complied fully with the law.
“In this digital era, data is a strategic asset that can be exploited for economic, political, or social benefit,” he said, stressing that the facility gives Botswana full sovereign control over its national data. ENDS
