Rakgare proposes over P1 billion budget

The Minister of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture has requested over P1 billion for recurrent budget and over P147 million for the development budget for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Presenting the budget proposal before Parliament, Minister Tumiso Rakgare said the recurrent budget represented an increase of 19 per cent compared to the 2023/2024 approved budget. 

He said over P161 million would be allocated to the Botswana National Sports Commission whilst over P154 million would go towards the payment of national service allowances. 

He also stated that over P100 million would go towards  sports development programmes. 

Over P10 million, he said,  was required for constituency sport tournaments while constituency arts competitions required over P20 million. 

The minister informed the house that over P22 million would be used for the National Arts Festival.

Regarding the gender affairs department budget, he stated that over P53 million would be allocated towards gender mainstreaming and over P3 million to women's voluntary organisations.

With regard to the development budget, Mr Rakgare said the P147 million budget had been apportioned across three programmes with the development of cultural infrastructure and programmes receiving 12 per cent, strengthening ministry operations 19 per cent and and 69 per cent allocated for MYSC infrastructure.

Mr Rakgare highlighted that about 70 per cent of the proposed development budget amounting to over P101 million was earmarked for implementing the ministry's infrastructure programme, which would be made up of major projects such as community sport stadia, state theatre and the construction of the Francistown stadium roof and the installation of the Mosadi Thari statue.
