Government recognises women Khama

03 Feb 2013

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama says government continues to empower and recognise women who are competent, hardworking and intelligent in society.

The President said this during a kgotla meeting in Karakubis in Ghanzi district on Thursday. He said women empowerment was evident in the current cabinet where women had been promoted to positions of ministers and assistant ministers.

Further, President Khama said some women had been appointed as district commissioners and others to decision-making positions. In addition, the President said others had been awarded medals as an appreciation of their contribution in the country.

General Khama was responding to Kgosi Thophane Botshake of Karakubis who had complained that despite their immense contribution and participation in the society, women were still not recognised.

Kgosi Botshake said women were actively engaged in areas such as Ipelegeng, social groups, teaching, nursing and looking after young children with little or no recognition from government.

He said in his village women were hardworking and involved in many activities including farming and Ipelegeng whereas men were just spectators.

Earlier on, Karakubis Village Development Committee Chairperson Ms Masego Tshwaane told President Khama that through Ipelegeng the village had constructed a library, pre-school and conducted clean up campaigns. She commended government for the upgrading of the local health post but expressed concern over shortage of nurses.

For his part, the Minister of Health Dr John Seakgosing said civil servants including nurses should assist the public with patience and diligence. He said the transfer of nurses was done on needs assessment basis .The president also donated 20 blankets to elderly destitutes in Karakubis and footballs for Karakubis youth. ENDS
