In a world where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand, Dream Flavours has emerged as a game changer in the yoghurt industry with a unique focus on using Botswana’s indigenous fruits that has captured the attention of health conscious consumers and food enthusiasts alike.
White Angels, T/A Dream Flavours, is a company owned by five Batswana women.
The company was registered in 2009 and is operating in Molepolole.
Dream Flavours is the company’s brand name and the products consist of ice pops, juices, madila and yoghurt.
In an interview with this publication, the Managing Director of Dream Flavours, Ms Litah Malejane, said by crafting their yoghurt with indigenous fruits such as mmilo, morula, motoroko, mogorogorwane, and lerotse, they wanted to set the company’s products apart in the market and also make products that will resonate with an ordinary Motswana because they have had these wild fruits from childhood.
“When we were still using exotic fruits, the community was not very much interested in eating our yoghurt then but now, since we diverted to indigenous fruits, we see many people visiting our factory,” she said.
“They have embraced our yoghurt because we have crafted it with wild fruits right from their own community, savouring a taste of their local harvest.”
Ms Malejane said Dream Flavours has collaborated with the community to harvest wild fruits and this act not only benefits the environment but also empowers local people to preserve traditions for sustainable resource management.
The company’s commitment to promoting local biodiversity and supporting small scale farmers has set them apart from their competitors by incorporating these indigenous fruits into their yoghurt recipes.
Dream Flavours not only offers a tantalizing taste experience but also contributes to the preservation of Botswana’s rich cultural heritage.
“Yoghurt contains beneficial probiotic bacteria that supports gut health and when combined with wild fruits, it can provide a diverse range of nutrients for these probiotics to thrive and overall, wild fruits are packed with antioxidants which enhance the nutritional profile of the yoghurt,” she explained.
Ms Malejane explained that one of the challenges they face is that indigenous fruits are seasonal, so it can be a challenge to source them consistently and they can also have variations in taste and quality due to factors like climate change, soil, and growing conditions, making it harder to standardize products.
As the demand for healthier and more sustainable food options continues to rise, Dream Flavours has positioned itself at the forefront of this movement and their dedication to using Botswana indigenous fruits not only showcases the country’s natural bounty but also highlights the importance of preserving local ecosystems and supporting local communities.
