Education Minister calls for improved monitoring

The Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has advised directors to closely monitor and supervise schools to ensure that delivery of content and assessment tools are in place to prepare students for the 2013 Junior Certificate Examination.

 According to a press release, the minister held a meeting with the Ministry Management Team on January 29 to deliberate and reflect on the 2012 Junior Certificate examination results and the new curriculum. 

The release states that the meeting, which was attended by the permanent secretary, deputy permanent secretaries and all directors, also discussed a wide range of issues including supervision of schools, monitoring and auditing of education systems, and review of ministry structures.

"The meeting agreed to put in place several measures aimed at addressing challenges experienced during the buildup to the 2012 examinations," the release says.

The measures include; monitoring of revised curriculum, review of the existing education programmes, intensifying in-service training for teachers on the revised curriculum and the new grading system.

The release further states that Dr Venson-Moitoi emphasised the need to invest more in monitoring of education systems, and highlighted the societal expectation for the ministry to deliver on its mandate. ENDS
