No new COVID variant in Botswana yet
16 Aug 2023
Botswana has so far not detected the new COVID-19 Omicron sub-lineage called EG.5.
A press release from the Ministry of Health further says there has not been any surge in COVID-19 cases in the country nor associated increase in hospitalisation and deaths.
“The ministry, therefore, views the situation to be stable locally and advises Batswana not to panic, but remain vigilant and will advise on the course of action to take should there be a need for such,” it states.
It explains that the new sub-lineage of the Omicron variant detected and circulating in some countries including some in Southern Africa can be traced as far back as six months ago.
The release also states that Botswana, like other countries, spent more than three years educating Batswana about COVID-19 and its preventative measures like the wearing of masks and avoiding crowded places.
As such, the ministry will continue with public education and advise as it may deem necessary, given the prevailing circumstances. Ends
