Chinkwa Bakery defies odds

28 Aug 2022

Co-owner of Tutume based Chinkwa Bakery, Ms Resego Mosomodi, says the self-funded business produces an assortment of bread.

Ms Mosomodi told BOPA during the Francistown Business Expo that the bakery had been in existence for two years and was known for producing loaves, confectionery, pastries, pizza base, pizza cone and pita bread.

Other products included scones, rock buns, cakes, Swiss roll, croissants, biscuits, cookies, samosas, spring rolls for platters and doughnuts which she said were best sellers.

“Raw material and ingredients used at our bakery are sourced from local wholesalers and supermarkets,” stated Ms Mosomodi, adding they emphasised on quality raw materials for goods of high value.

She said the bakery supplied Save Rite in Tutume, general dealers, tuck shops, filling stations, senior and junior secondary schools, brigades, a hospital and individual customers.

Ms Mosomodi said being a self-funded business came with challenges as limited resources.

She said their target was 3 000 loaves per day but were limited to about 1 000, which way below demand.

“Our products move fast. Securing suitable machinery will enable us to increase production and meet demand”, Ms Mosomodi said and added that products were tested and approved by National Food Technology Research Centre though their marketing was not yet what they wanted it to be.

She also stated that poor quality power supply could not sustain the available equipment thus limiting production.

Ms Mosomodi said the bakery employed 17 youth who worked on shifts. BOPA
