Employee training and development programmes are critical for enhancing employee performance, says KGK Diamonds Botswana business development assistant manager, Mr Siddarth Gothi.
Speaking at the KGK Academy graduation ceremony in Gaborone recently, Mr Gothi said training presented a good opportunity for employees to grow their knowledge and improve their job skills to become more effective in the workplace.
He said KGK group was a company focused on diamond cutting and polishing, with the mission to ensure systematic transfer of skills through expert trainers, thereby enhancing the skill set of locals and aiding Batswana to gain economic independence and prosperity.
Mr Gothi noted that the training equipped trainees to be industry-ready and to become skilled and knowledgeable human capital of the country.
The purpose of training was to help localise the workforce of the diamond industry and to maximise the beneficiation of rough diamonds within Botswana, he said.
He noted that the course comprised three months theory training followed by another three months of practical training, saying the company absorbed all trainees who completed their full six months training in diamond cutting and polishing.
“It is evident that the younger generation entering the market are much energetic and their abilities to grasp is much faster, hence the programme is a catalyst for them to become excellent polishers with full knowledge,” he said.
Furthermore he noted that the programme was open for both graduates and non-graduates.
Mr Gothi also confirmed that the graduation was for 108 graduates who passed the six months training and that the company had currently absorbed 100 fresh trainees who would be graduating in the next six months.
“When employees know they have a supportive employer, they are more engaged and enthusiastic.
Providing employees with training and development opportunities shows an employer is willing to support its employees throughout their careers” he said.
Mr Gothi also donated P86 300 to Botswana Society for the Deaf. He said the company had hired deaf people.
In his address one of the local directors Mr Tshebetso Kgatlwane applauded the company for its effort to train employees as this would positively affect the productivity of workers, which in turn would increase profits and efficiency of the organisation.
He encouraged graduates to apply what they had learnt.
Mr Kgatlwane further urged graduates to embrace opportunities that life threw at them. BOPA
