Retired nurse warns youth against transactional sex

25 Jan 2013

Kanye youth have been warned against engaging in transactional sex as it could increase the risks of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

A retired nurse from the Botswana Retired Nurses Society (BORNUS) Kanye branch, Ms Keabilwe Solomon said in an interview that they had taken it upon themselves to educate the people, particularly the youth through different forums such as kgotlas, schools and health facilities on health matters.

She said they were currently talking about transactional sex as they had realised that it was happening and people needed to be warned.

Ms Solomon described transactional sex as “sex without love” which occurs after the victims had been given gifts. After being pampered with gifts, the woman found it difficult to resist sexual demands from the man and even fail to report the matter to the police.

She warned the youth who frequented night clubs and sometimes indulged in alcohol consumption to guard against transactional sex, as it could have long term repercussions.

Meanwhile, she said their society had branches in different villages and they were spreading the same health messages to the nation, particularly the youth.

She also encouraged parents to talk about sexual matters with their children, as it would help them keep away from being involved in sexual relationships at an early age.  ENDS
