The Rural Area Dwellers Programme (RADP) and other government programmes intended for poverty eradication are said to be progressing well in Kutuku, one of the RADs areas in the Jwaneng/Mabutsane constituency.
Speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, the Kutuku Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson Ms Omphemetse Thojane commended the government for the programmes availed for people living in rural areas.
She said a total of 16 houses had been built in their village, nine of which were for the needy, three for orphans and another three for people living with disabilities. She said this was a welcome development considering that most residents did not have the capacity to afford their own shelter.
She also noted that four women were financed under the RADP to operate a bakery, which she said were currently being operated by the VDC to generate income for village developments. She said this bakery was supplying bread to the primary school as well as individual customers in the village.
Additionally, Ms Thojane said five other women had been funded for a sewing project and their operational office was under construction.
Still under the same programme, the VDC chairperson said more than 40 residents were given livestock to help them sustain themselves and their households, while 13 were given small stock under the poverty eradication programme.
She explained that two young people were enrolled for tertiary education through the Affirmative Action programme, while seven were enrolled in the Tirelo Sechaba programme in various departments. She however requested that the latter be offered skills empowerment relevant to the work they were undertaking in respective fields.
