Jwaneng mine refurbishes learning facilities

As part of its commitment to promote research and reading among learners, the Jwaneng diamond mine handed over refurbished learning facilities worth P1 million to different primary schools within the township.
The projects, which form part of the company’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI), included upgrading of libraries at Dinonyane and Kgalagadi primary schools as well as refurbishment of Science and Computer laboratories at the said schools.
The company further sponsored Maboane, Kgalagadi, Jwana, Teemane and Betesankwe primary schools with a total of P200 000 towards the improvement of performance in Agriculture.
Additionally, the mine set up an information corner at the Jwaneng National Library which would serve as a contact point for members of the public regarding any information on Jwaneng Mine and Debswana in general.
Speaking at the official handing over of the projects, the Jwaneng mine general manager Mr Albert Milton said that his company was committed to supporting learning within the communities they worked within.
He said the intention was to enhance learning in schools so that the township could excel academically.
“Our children’s educational support is something very close to my heart. My long term vision is to see Jwaneng area taking the lead and excelling academically,” he noted.
He also stated that the boost on Agriculture would go a long way in enhancing skills which would be used to feed the nation in future.
He urged the school communities to take proper care of the facilities so that they could make an impact on future learners and the community.
The Jwaneng CSI committee chairperson Mr Tumelo Ntlhayakgosi explained that the upgrading of the primary school libraries included installation of audio-visual equipment, purchasing of furniture and books while the computer laboratory at Dinonyane primary school was provided with furniture, re-wiring as well as a sick bay.
He also said that in order to enable required experimentation at the Kgalagadi primary school Science lab, they installed Science apparatus such as skeletons and test tubes, as well as storage cabinets, among others.
The deputy permanent secretary in the education ministry, Mr Simon Coles commended the mine for its contribution towards the education sector.
He noted that these facilities would go a long way in enhancing learning. ENDS
