Tutume kgotla shelter almost complete

14 Apr 2016

The chairperson of the Tutume main kgotla project, Mr Siyani Sisila says the community initiated project for the construction of a shelter is on course.

Speaking in an interview recently, Mr Sisila said the project, which was being built through volunteerism by the community at a cost of over P1 million was started last year and was expected to be completed next month.

Mr Sisila said the project was slightly behind schedule, noting that the work was at roof level and that progress stands at 75 per cent instead of the expected 80 percent.

He said progress was satisfactory considering the fact that they faced a number of challenges which were beyond their control, citing re-designing the plan and unfavourable weather conditions.

“We experienced heavy rainfall towards the end of February and this dealt us a hard blow as we had to stop construction for some time. Some of the trenches that were dug for pillars were covered with rain water and mud so we had to dig up again,” he said.

Mr Sisila also said part of the plan was re-designed so as to accommodate more pillars supporting the roof, as such, he said they had to break part of the constructed slab as per advice from the physical planner.

In addition, Mr Sisila noted that due to lack of skills on technical aspects such as physical planners and other advisers, they depend on the Tutume Sub-council.

He noted that if such workmanship was engaged in their official duties at the council, they were forced to halt the project.

Mr Sisila further noted that the construction period has now been extended to end of August with the hope that it would be completed within the stipulated period.

“Our project solely depends on donations from individuals and some private owned companies, as such, we always exercise patience on the delivery of the materials from our donors. But so far all the donors have honoured their promises and materials have been delivered accordingly,” he said.

Mr Sisila said currently they were waiting for roofing materials and other necessities to be delivered and has commended the traditional leaders of all the kgotlas within the village and the Village Extension Committees (VETs) for working collectively towards the success of the project. ENDS
