Community decry poor hospital services

11 Jan 2016

The Member of Parliament for Bobonong says the feedback from members of the public about service provision at Bobonong Primary Hospital was not good.

Briefing the hospital administration recently during a tour of the hospital, Mr Kgathi said constituents complain about long queues as well as poor service delivery from the hospital and urged health workers to seek other strategies of assisting customers.

He said patients complain that they come early in the morning but were only consulted late in the afternoon by doctors and nurses.

Mr Kgathi, who is also the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, added that patients also complain that congestion was exacerbated by the incorporation of the Infectious Disease Care Clinic (IDCC) to the out-patient department.

However, the chief medical officer, Dr Enock Mulumba said they have the mandate to provide quality service, but that their efforts were hampered by shortage of operating space, staff such as nurses and doctors as well as transport.

Dr Mulumba said the relocation of the IDCC to the out-patient department was not an overnight development, but that it had to be done to address the challenge of the stigma attached to HIV.

He said elderly people who were suffering from chronic ailments such as hypertension and diabetes were also complaining that they were not given attention, but such was only accorded to IDCC alone.

Dr Mulumba said the hospital has an establishment of 10 doctors but only operating with four and was also having shortfalls of nurses.

The hospital matron, Ms Thalosani Peters said the hospital was also experiencing a shortage of wards as it has only 30 beds in the general ward which was not enough for the constituents.

Ms Peters also stated that their mandate to provide quality service was hampered by severe shortage of nurses, and said they were facing a challenge with a boiler for hot water.

Apart from the hospital, the MP also toured Bobonong infrastructure internal roads and Ipelegeng projects.

Through Ipelegeng, the Bobirwa Sub Council has constructed an extension of the Rural Administration Centre offices that encompass the council chamber.

Through the project, Ipelegeng has also constructed a guard room at the Department of Roads.

Concerning internal roads, Mr Kgathi said constituents appreciate the roads but were skeptical about culverts, drifts and the storm water drainage system that some said leads water into their homesteads and appealed to the council and the contractor to rectify the anomaly.

Bots Consultant resident engineer, Mr Amantle Moeng said they have identified some defects such as the bleeding of the road due to excessive heat and some culverts and drifts which have been badly designed but would be addressed.

Mr Kgathi also visited some Nyeletso Lehuma projects to acknowledge their progress. Ends
