Old buildings vital

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has appealed to Batswana to protect old buildings since they are part of history.
Speaking at the official opening of a renovated Kgosi Sekgoma II's house on December 23, President Khama appealed to Batswana to desist from destroying historical buildings and sites.
He stated that work was in progress to restore the outlook of Bangwato kgotla to ensure that it could appeals to tourists.
Kgosi Sekgoma’s house was built between 1918 and 1920 and the first President of Botswana, Sir Seretse Khama stayed there.
Department of Building and Engineering Services and the Department of National Museum and Monuments under the guidance of Malwelamotse, a regiment that Kgosi Sekgoma II led renovated the house.
During the refurbishment, the ministerial technical committee engaged the services of unemployed youths.
The president said the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism should devise strategies of advertising various cultural events countrywide.
The move, President Khama said, would ensure that many tourists and researchers throng such events to learn about various cultures.
The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama said his ministry was producing videos of various cultural events so that Batswana could learn from each other. Ends
