Community library closes computer illiteracy gap
24 Nov 2015
Besides the everyday normal business of reading, research, membership registration, borrowing books and other related activities, Sebina Community Library and Cultural Centre has embarked on providing free basic computer training to the residents.
In an interview with BOPA, the head of Sebina Community Library, Ms Keatlaretse Tubego noted that since the inception of the training last year, a total number of 224 people have been trained and mostly are the youth.
Ms Tubego explained that the training has brought along a significant development as most of the residents are now computer literate and oriented.
She said before the training was introduced, library resources, especially the computers turned out to be white elephants as most of the people were challenged on how to operate them.
Ms Tubego explained that training lasts for a period of four weeks and upon completion each participant is given a recognition certificate, which also acts as an acknowledgement.
Meanwhile the chairperson of Sebina Village Development Committee, Mr Tlhabologo Mabuku said the computer training unites the youth and the elders, adding that it is open to all and they also work and interact under the same roof.
“This training has helped to close the computer illiteracy rate among residents. We have been experiencing a low turn out of people coming to make use of these resources, though they had much interest, they felt discouraged because they could not operate them without any assistance,” she said. Ends
