Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Patrick Monkutlwatsi says the mandate of prison is to provide security and caring for prisoners with the objective of rehabilitation.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of inmates who attended a two-week course on development and leadership on Friday in Gaborone, Mr Monkutlwatsi said training was meant to assist inmates in their process of rehabilitation.
He said rehabilitation has many aspects such as skills acquisition and psycho-social skills, and that the course they undertook had one of those aspects.
Mr Monkutlwatse said the government provides resources to litigate the progress of such initiatives and encouraged inmates to utilise all the resources provided and take wise decisions.
He said upon completion of the course, the inmates have to change for the good by being trustworthy and exemplary to others.
The chairperson of Botswana Prisons fellowship, Mr Ronald Dintsi said the training was important to their lives and helped them to change.
One of the graduates, Neo Meshack commended the government and Botswana Prisons for giving them the opportunity to partake in the training.
He said he learned a lot from the course and that it would enable him to accept full responsibility for his deeds as well as to have principles. About 39 inmates received certificates. Ends
