Keakabetse Gakelebone has been hailed as a humble and respectful person who had leadership qualities. She was elected prefect at MatshaCollege in Kang until she completed her BGCSE.
Speaking at the funeral in Salajwe on Saturday, a representative from Matsha College, Mr Pogiso Itomeng, said Keakabetse was a well-mannered young woman who took her education seriously.
He said not even once did they call her parents to school because of misbehavior. Mr Itomeng said Keakabetse had the potential of becoming a competitive learner who was going to benefit her parents and the country.
He therefore said it was not a loss for the family only but for the school and Batswana at large. A representative from Matsha College Student Representative Council, Constance Tshimane, said she had known Keakabetse as loving person who always came to her assistance.
She said when she arrived at school she was the one who helped her settle down and feel at home. Her best friend Kealeboga Johane also noted that they shared a lot of things together and helped her with many things at school.
She said it was the humility and love that drew her closer to Keakabetse more so that she had the ability to guide and lead others. A representative from the family, Mr Digau Keipoletse, said they were expecting a lot from their child but they accepted what had happened.
He said the loss had not only affected the family but even Batswana at large adding that even though the child was still young the future looked bright for her as she was a respectful person.
Keakabetse was born on 27 September 1997. She started her primary school at Salajwe primary before she went to Lempu junior secondary school still in Salajwe. Later she went to do her form 4 at Matsha College in Kang. She leaves behind her mother and two siblings, a brother and sister.
Kgosi Moalo Gaerupe of Salajwe thanked the government for the support they have received ever since the accident happened.
He extended special appreciation to President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama for his support and the counseling they gave to students and parents. Earlier on, the Minister of Transport and Communications Mr Tshenolo Mabeo read the condolences message from President Khama. Ends
